Joseph Cannon (born January 1, 1975 in Sun Valley, Idaho ) is a retired American football player.

Career

Cannon played for the college team at the University of California at Santa Barbara until 1997 . He was then not drafted by the major league soccer team and therefore moved to San Diego Flash in the then A-League . After a season he moved to the San José Earthquakes in the MLS.

Due to an injury to the previous goalkeeper David Kramer, Cannon played eight season games of the 1999 season from the start. Because of his performance, he remained the team's regular goalkeeper and won the 2001 MLS Cup . In 2002 he was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

At the beginning of 2003, Cannon moved to the RC Lens in France. However, he could not prevail there and returned to the USA in the summer of 2003. The Earthquakes gave the player rights to the Colorado Rapids .

Due to Scott Garlick's strong performance, Cannon had to sit on the bench first. Coach Tim Hankinson used Cannon in the play-offs. When Garlick then moved to Dallas Burn at the end of the season , Cannon got his regular seat. During the 2004 season , Cannon was one of the MLS's top goalkeepers. He won his second Goalkeeper of the Year award and was also named to the MLS Best XI .

On December 1, 2006, he was transferred to the LA Galaxy . The Rapids received for this the players Hérculez Gómez and Ugo Ihemelu . He made his debut for the Californians on April 8, 2007. In early January, he moved back to the San Jose Earthquakes for a transfer fee. Here, too, he played a very good season and was able to save four of six penalties. In the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft, he was selected by the Vancouver Whitecaps , where he has played since the 2011 season. At the end of the 2013 season, he ended his career as a football player.

Cannon's father is Canadian, so he could have played for the Canadian national soccer team. But he decided for the USA and made his debut on June 8, 2003 against New Zealand.
