In 2007 he ended his career at Real Salt Lake .

Career

Pope already had a successful career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with several honors behind him when he joined Washington-based team DC United in 1996 as a second pick in the College Draft of Major League Soccer (MLS) .

In the first MLS season he became a living legend, as he scored the winning goal in overtime to 3-2 against the Los Angeles Galaxy in the pouring rain in the season finale (in the MLS the playoff mode is played) . In the same year he was appointed to the squad of the US selection and also completed international games at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , Georgia .

1997 was a landmark year for Pope as he not only defended the title with DC United, but was also voted into the MLS All-Star squad and voted best defender of the season. 1998 was another successful year for Pope, as he won the CONCACAF championship with the US team and DC United scored the winning goal in the final to win the CONCACAF Interamerican Cup (comparable to the UEFA Champions League ).

In the next few years Pope was repeatedly plagued by injuries and could not play or play through some season games. However, that didn't stop fans from nominating him for the All-Star Game over the years. In 2000, Pope was also the first recipient of the MLS Humanitarian Award, an award given for special commitment to society by those responsible for MLS. Two years later, Pope appeared in all five American matches at the 2002 World Cup in Japan / South Korea and was one of the decisive factors for their surprisingly successful performance.

After all those years of injury, Pope went to MetroStars in 2002 , where he continued to do excellent defensive work for three years and formed the best defense in the league with his teammates. In 2005 Pope joined Real Salt Lake . In 2006, the USA and Eddie Pope retired from the World Cup in Germany after poor performance in the preliminary round. For Pope it was the last World Cup, as he announced in early August 2006 that he would retire from international football. He ended his international career after 82 games and eight goals.

In total, Eddie Pope played 254 games in 11 years of Major League Soccer , scored ten goals and was voted the best MLS team of all time.
