Dean Ashton (born November 24, 1983 in Swindon , Wiltshire ) is a retired English football player .

Ashton began his career as a professional footballer at the then English second division club Crewe Alexandra and went to Norwich City on January 11, 2005 , where he scored 17 goals in 44 league games.

After Norwich City relegated at the end of the 2004/05 season, he moved to West Ham United in January 2006 , where he came in the remaining games of the 2005/06 season to eleven league appearances, was nine times in the starting lineup and scored three goals. He is the record transfer from the London club, who paid him an initial transfer fee of £ 7 million.

In terms of his playing style, he was a real penalty area striker who could prevail well with his 1.85 m and 80 kg. After nine games in England's U21 team , then national coach Steven McClaren invited him to an international match against Greece for the first time when he broke his ankle . Instead, he made his debut on June 1, 2008 in a 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago and played a - only moderately successful - first half.

In December 2009, Ashton announced his retirement due to injury. Doctors saw his long-term mobility at risk. After his ankle fracture in 2006, he suffered another ankle injury in late 2008. He didn't play a game after that.
