history

The construction site of Earthquakes Stadium in June 2014

The San José Earthquakes were founded in 1995 as San José Clash (until 1999) and were based in their first time in Major League Soccer from 1996 to 2005 in the Spartan Stadium of San José State University . In 2008 they returned to the MLS and played their games until 2014 at Buck Shaw Stadium at Santa Clara University .

In April 2008, the city and the owners of the San José Earthquakes agreed on the location and price for the future venue. The Earthquakes paid $ 132 million for the 66 acres (267.092 m 2 ) stadium site, a former FMC Corporation factory . The city bought the 75 acre (303,514 m 2 ) area near San Jose International Airport for $ 81 million in 2005. Due to a worsening economic situation due to the financial crisis , the price was renegotiated in April 2009 and was then 89 million US dollars.

The first designs for the stadium were unveiled on September 19, 2009 by Lewis Wolff, co-owner of the Earthquakes . The plans for the European-style football arena envisaged three roofed-over spectator tiers (main stand, back straight and a back stand). A rectangular area with tiers close to the playing field, where the roof enhances the acoustics and atmosphere . On the open side is a double-sided HD - Video Wall find their place. At the time, the San José Earthquakes Stadium was to have 15,000 seats and cost $ 60 million. In September 2010, the architecture firm 360 Architecture from Kansas City was selected for the construction. A little closer to the new stadium came on March 3, 2011 with the start of demolition work on the site of the old FMC Corporation factory.

The planning committee of the city of San José voted 6-0 on February 22nd, 2012 for the building permit for the site on Coleman Ave. closed and cleared the way for the new building. The groundbreaking ceremony was celebrated on October 21, 2012. At the event, a new Guinness World Record was set for the largest crowd to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. A total of 6,256 people picked up the shovel and exceeded the record of 4,532 from Jaipur , India by more than 2,000 participants. The pouring of the concrete foundations began on September 27, 2013. 600 yards were poured with more than 70 concrete mixers .

At the beginning of November 2013, the first steel girder elements of the grandstands were installed. At the end of March 2014, work on the steel grandstands was completed. Up to 120 workers were employed at the stadium. The tiers are built on 3,429 steel beams. They are held together by 94,867 bolts . The lightest steel part weighs 68.1 lbs (around 31 kg ), while the heaviest part weighs 21,252 lbs (around 9,640 kg). A total of 6,348,000 lbs (around 2,880 t ) of steel was used. An area of 149,785 sq ft (13,915 m 2 ) was built over. With the symbolic installation of the first four plastic seats in the stadium on September 23, 2014, the assembly of the grandstand seating began.

On November 19, 2014, the US communications company Avaya Inc. from Santa Clara acquired the naming rights to the future home of the San José Earthquakes. The contract for the soccer stadium has a term of ten years and is worth US $ 20 million.

When the first stadium designs were presented in September 2009, it was assumed that the construction would be completed in 2012. After delays, the stadium inauguration was scheduled for the start of the MLS season in March 2015. The construction costs financed by the owner group of the club, John Fisher and Lew Wolff, increased from a planned 60 to 100 million US dollars. The stadium offers 18,000 seats in the three tiers. The level with the 16 boxes and 576 club seats is not, as usual, raised on the stands, but at pitch level below the grandstand seats. Under the double-sided HD video wall is the largest open-air bar in North America with 3,647 sq ft (around 339 m 2 ) and more than 45 beer taps .

The first game at the stadium was the meeting of the Preseason between the Earthquakes and Los Angeles Galaxy reduced on 28 February 2015. The number of visitors was 10,000 and San Jose was the game with 3: win second

The inauguration of the stadium was celebrated on March 22, 2015 as part of the game of the San José Earthquakes against the Chicago Fire in front of a sold out house. The home side won 2-1. Fatai Alashe scored the first competitive goal in the new home in the 5th minute for the Quakes .

The stadium was also designed for rugby matches . As part of the rugby union tournament Pacific Nations Cup 2015 , the games Canada against Japan (6:20) and United States against Samoa (16:21) were played in the stadium on July 18 of that year . The United States national rugby union team played a friendly against Italy (20:24) in the stadium on June 18, 2016 .

On May 28, 2015, Major League Soccer announced that the 2016 MLS All-Star Game will take place at the San José Earthquakes Stadium. The opponent of the MLS All-Stars on July 28, 2016 was Arsenal FC from the English Premier League , who won the game 2-1 against the MLS selection.

For the 2020 season the stadium was renamed Earthquakes Stadium .
