Rankin began his career in the 2003/04 season with the Lincoln Stars in the United States Hockey League . From the 2004/05 season, the striker played for four seasons in the university team of the University of Notre Dame in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , which in turn was integrated into the National Collegiate Athletic Association . For the 2008/09 season, the American moved to the Central Hockey League to the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees , thus completing his first professional season.
In the following season he was on the ice for the Toledo Walleye in the East Coast Hockey League , due to good offensive performances during the current season he was even loaned out briefly as part of a try-out to the Manitoba Moose in the higher-class American Hockey League . The 2010/11 season was similar for Rankin, this time he completed a loan of ten games with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL after good performance in Toledo .
In the 2011/12 season Rankin played 15 games as assistant captain for Toledo before moving to the AHL for the Rochester Americans . For the 2013/14 season , league competitor Syracuse Crunch signed the right-wing shooter for a year. In the summer of 2014, the attacker moved to Europe and signed a one-year contract with the Kölner Haien from the German Ice Hockey League . There the American could not meet the expectations placed on him on the offensive within the current season and therefore returned to the Rochester Americans in January 2015.
