Portage is a city in Kalamazoo County in the US state of Michigan with approximately 45,000 residents. It lies on the southern border of Kalamazoo and was formed on December 31, 1963 from the area of ​​the former Portage Township.

Portage has two public high schools, Portage Central High School and Portage Northern High School . The pharmaceutical company Pfizer operates several companies on site and has caused public attention and controversial discussion by laying off employees in recent years.

Portage has an extensive network of historic parks and trails available for walking, cycling, and in the case of watercourses, canoeing and other recreational activities. The Lake Austin Lake occupies the southwestern part of the city. It was named after Moses Austin, who emigrated from Genesee County , New York to Portage Township in 1833 . On May 18, 1850, a post office called "Austin's Lake" was founded, which was operated under Moses Austin until August 15, 1853. A train station of the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad already existed here in 1867 .
