Erethism
As Erethism ( Erethie ) refers to a pathologically increased excitability and a restless urge to move. The term erethic comes from the Greek (ἐρεθίζω [erethizo]: to irritate) and stands for irritable, excitable.
In the older form of psychiatry it is used to describe any form of strong and permanent arousal. Such forms can be:
- Erethism ebriosorum of alcoholics ,
- Erethism mercurialis (excitement and insomnia in chronic mercury poisoning ), see Hatter Syndrome ,
- Erethism tropicus as a form of sunstroke rarely used for heat stroke,
- Erethism vaginae: vaginismus ,
- Genital erethism (increased sexual excitability).
Today it is used to describe urgent hyperkinesis in children. In the ICD-10 , the other hyperkinetic disorders are coded accordingly under F90.8.
