Yossi Shai Benayoun ( Hebrew יוסי בניון; * May 5, 1980 in Dimona ) is an Israeli soccer player who is under contract with Beitar Jerusalem . He is the top scorer in his country. In September 2017, he became the first Israeli soccer player to make his 100th international match.

Career

Club career

Benayoun grew up in Dimona . At a young age he was recognized as a great talent. When he was nine years old he moved to Hapoel Be'er Scheva. At the age of 15 he attended the Ajax Amsterdam Youth Academy . After two years, he got homesick and returned to Israel . At the age of 17 he rose to the first team of Hapoel Be'er Scheva . However, the club was relegated. A year later he moved from Be'er Sheva to Maccabi Haifa . Haifa's President Yaakov Shachar agreed with the then President of Hapoel Beer Sheva to pay part of the transfer fee to Beersheba in the event of a resale to a European club. In four seasons at Maccabi Haifa, Benayoun scored more than 50 goals as a midfielder, including two hat-tricks. His greatest successes with the club were reaching the quarter-finals of the Cup winners' Cup and the championship in the 2000/01 season under coach Avram Grant .

In 2002 he moved to Racing Santander. In July 2005 he signed with the then promoted to the Premiere League West Ham United . His greatest success here was taking part in the FA Cup finals .

In 2007 Benayoun moved to Liverpool FC . After Eli Cohen and Ronny Rosenthal , he was the third Israeli player to play for Liverpool. In the summer of 2010 he went to Chelsea and was loaned out to Arsenal for one season in August 2011. On August 31, 2012, he was loaned to West Ham United for the first half of the season. The deal included an option to extend the loan until the end of the season. He received the 15 as a shirt number. He returned to Chelsea on January 3, 2013. Due to a knee injury, he was only able to play a few games.

After Benayoun was out of a club after the 2012/13 season, he signed on December 10, 2013 a contract until the end of the 2013/14 season with the Queens Park Rangers . In 2014 he moved back to Israel and signed a two-year contract with Maccabi Haifa . On June 13, 2016, Benayoun signed with Maccabi Tel Aviv for one year. In his first competitive game, Benayoun scored the winning goal in a 1-0 away win at ND Gorica .

National team

On November 18, 1998, he was first used in the Israeli national team , in which he established himself as a key player. He played with Israeli greats such as Haim Revivo (most recently Galatasaray Istanbul ) and Eyal Berkovic (most recently FC Portsmouth and Maccabi Tel Aviv ).

Yossi was the captain of the Israeli national team from August 2006 to June 2013 . In the qualifying games for the European Championship in 2008 , he contributed to the good performance of the Israeli national soccer team. On August 14, 2013, he set Arik Benado's record in the 2-0 draw against Ukraine with his 94th international match and surpassed him in May 2014. After that, however, he only made sporadic appearances. In qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, he was substituted on in the third last game for his 100th international match counted by the Israeli Federation, making him the first Israeli to reach this mark .
