Greg Vanney (born June 11, 1974 in South Boston , Virginia ) is a former American football player and current coach .

He has been the coach of Toronto FC and director of the TFC Academy, the franchise's youth and development academy, since 2014 .

Player career

Youth and college

Vanney attended Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Arizona and played for the school team. He won the state championship three times in a row with the team. He still holds the school records for most assists and goals in one season. In 1992 Vanney went to Florida International University , which is located in the metropolitan area of ​​Miami . There he played college soccer , but in 1993 he moved to UCLA , where he played for the UCLA Bruins until 1995 .

professional

Vanney participated in the 1996 MLS College Draft and was selected by the Los Angeles Galaxy . Early in the 1996 season, Vanney was loaned to the Sacramento Scorpions, who played in the then USISL Select League , for three games . He played for LA Galaxy for a total of six years and was one of the best defenders in Major League Soccer at the time . In 2001 Vanney moved to France for SC Bastia . In 2005 he returned to the USA and played for FC Dallas . After further positions at the Colorado Rapids and DC United , he ended his career as a football player at the end of the 2008 season with Los Angeles Galaxy.

National team

Vanney was repeatedly active for the United States national soccer team for over 11 years . He made his debut on December 21, 1996 against Guatemala. He was part of the squad for the CONCACAF Gold Cups in 2000 , 2003 and 2005 . He also took part in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup with the USA .

Coaching career

After his career as a player, Vanney completed the coaching course and received the USSF "A" coaching license. He was also involved in building the US Soccer Development Academy and other USSF programs. Vanney was the director of the Real Salt Lake Academy from 2008 to 2011 . Vanney was the first to implement the requirements for a youth academy in Major League Soccer.

Vanney returned to Arizona in 2008. There he became Director of Soccer Operations at Grande Sports World and Head of the Real Salt Lake-Arizona Youth Academy. Grande Sports World is the operator of a sports field for soccer teams.

In January 2011 Vanney became an assistant coach at CD Chivas USA .

On August 31, 2014, Vanney became the coach of Toronto FC after Ryan Nelsen was fired. He managed to let the team play successfully again in the 2013 season.

Greg Vanney is the uncle of US U-17 international Eriq Zavaleta .
