Marcel de Jong (born October 15, 1986 in Newmarket , Ontario ) is a Canadian - Dutch soccer player . He plays in Major League Soccer for the Vancouver Whitecaps and is a Canadian international .
biography
Marcel de Jong was born in Canada to Dutch parents and moved with his family to Valkenswaard in the Netherlands at the age of four . There he started playing football at VV De Valk . In 1996 he moved to the youth department of PSV Eindhoven . On August 20, 2004 he made his professional debut for Helmond Sport in the Eerste Divisie , the second highest Dutch division. In 2006 he moved to the Eredivisie club Roda JC Kerkrade . In 2008 he reached the final of the KNVB Cup with Roda, but was not used in the 2-0 defeat against Feyenoord Rotterdam .
De Jong moved to the then second division FC Augsburg for the 2010/11 season , with whom he signed a two-year contract. On August 21, 2010 he made his debut for Augsburg on the 1st matchday of the second division season 2010/11 in the game against FC Ingolstadt . At the end of the season he was promoted to the Bundesliga with FC Augsburg . After four and a half years, the club terminated its contract on January 28, 2015. On 2 March 2015, de Jong joined the MLS - Franchise Sporting Kansas City on. There he made his debut on March 14, 2015 in the game against FC Dallas .
National team
Since 2003, de Jong has been regularly appointed to Canadian selection teams. In 2003 he failed with the U-17 in qualifying for the U-17 World Cup in Finland. Two years later he qualified with the U-20s for the 2005 Junior World Cup in the Netherlands, where he was used in all three games when they were eliminated from the preliminary round.
In September 2007 he decided, according to the rules of FIFA at the time , according to which a player had to choose an association up to his 21st birthday, to play for the Canadian national team in the future. The main reason he named was the higher probability of being nominated. Two months later he made his international debut in a friendly against South Africa . When he took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 , he scored his first international goal in a 2-2 game against Costa Rica .
