The DCU Center (formerly Worcester Centrum , Worcester's Centrum Center ) is a multi-purpose arena in Worcester , Massachusetts . The city-owned DCU Center got its current name in 2004 through the sale of the naming rights to the Digital Federal Credit Union .
history
The Worcester Center was built in September 1982 as an arena with 12,300 seats, but in 1997 it was expanded by 2,500 to 14,800 seats. In 1997 the entire building was modernized.
use
The main users of the DCU Center are the Worcester Railers from the ECHL , after the Worcester Sharks from the American Hockey League were active there until 2015 . The center was previously the venue for the Worcester IceCats , which also played in the AHL. The New England Surge from the Continental Indoor Football League are also active in the DCU Center. Other users were with the New England Blazers between 1989 and 1991 a team of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League and in 1994 the Massachusetts Marauders from the Arena Football League .
In the 1980s, numerous pop concerts took place regularly in Worcester, as the nearby Boston Garden was increasingly avoided due to its weaker acoustics. The DCU Center serves as an alternative to the larger TD Garden .
Events that regularly take place at the DCU Center are Disney on Ice and WWE events. In 2009 it was the venue for the AHL All-Star Classic , which is hosted by the Worcester Sharks in cooperation with the American Hockey League.
