The WesBanco Arena is a multi-purpose arena in the US city ​​of Wheeling in the state of West Virginia .

history

The venue, with a construction cost of US $ 7 million, is located on the banks of the Ohio River and was opened in 1977 under the name Wheeling Civic Center . Since 2003, the hall has been named after WesBanco Bank, Inc., based in Wheeling. In August 2013, the sponsorship agreement was extended by ten years. The bank pays $ 2.5 million for the agreement. The extension is intended to support an upcoming renovation of the 30-year-old arena.

Since 1992 the ice hockey team of the Wheeling Nailers ( ECHL , until 1996: Wheeling Thunderbirds) has been the main sporting user of the WesBanco Arena. The Nailers are a farm team of the Pittsburgh Penguins from the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League (AHL). In the ECHL seasons 1992/93 and 2015/16 , play-off finals of the Thunderbirds and Nailers for the Riley Cup and Kelly Cup took place in the hall. In addition to ice hockey, the WesBanco Arena was and is used by arena football teams. For a short time, the college basketball team of the West Virginia Mountaineers from West Virginia University (WVU) also played their games in the sports arena. The ice surface measures 56.38 m × 25.91  m (185 ft × 85  ft ), which is installed in the arena from October to April. For other events, the maximum dimensions of 58.22 m × 37.78 m (191 ft × 124 ft) are available from May to September. The arena also offers several conference rooms . The main room "The Club" is 30.5 m × 15 m (100 ft × 50 ft) in size and is furnished with carpet, as well as a bar and kitchen and offers 320 seats. The second room "West Meeting Room" can be divided into four smaller conference rooms. There is space for 180 people.

From May 2015 to June 2016, the WesBanco Arena was renovated for 6.3 million US dollars. It was u. a. A new lobby was built, roof repairs carried out, new seats installed in the stands and a new electronic display panel hung under the hall ceiling. The modernization work is intended to hold events there and attract new ones. On June 18, 2016, visitors were able to visit the converted arena as part of an open house .

From 2019, the West Virginia Roughriders arena football team from the new Professional Arena Football (PAF) league will play their home games in the multi-purpose hall. The team was previously based in the capital, Richmond , for two seasons as the Richmond Roughriders ( APF / AAL ).
