The North Charleston Coliseum is a multi-purpose hall in the US city of North Charleston in the state of South Carolina . It is part of the North Charleston Convention Center Complex . The building, which opened on January 29, 1993, has a maximum of 14,500 seats (11,000 built-in seats and 3,500 mobile seats). The Performing Arts & Convention Center with 2,300 seats and the North Charleston Convention Center added to the complex in 1999.
history
The arena has been home to the ECHL ice hockey team of the South Carolina Stingrays and the NCAA basketball team of the Charleston Southern Buccaneers of Charleston Southern University since 1993 . Former users of the North Charleston Coliseum are the arena football team Charleston Swamp Foxes ( Af2 ) from 2000 to 2003, the Charleston Lowgators of the NBA D-League were based there from 2001 to 2004 and 2006, the Carolina Sandsharks ( NIFL ). The multi-purpose hall hosted the final tournaments of the Big South Conference in NCAA college basketball in 1993 and 1994, and the Southern Conference in NCAA college basketball in 2007.
When construction began, no ice hockey rink was planned in the arena, then the city of North Charleston was awarded the ECHL ice hockey franchise . So you had to reschedule and the South Carolina Stingrays could play indoors from the start. In the arena, u. a. also concerts , musical shows , wrestling shows , circus performances of Cirque du Soleil , Rodeos of the Professional Bull Riders instead.
The arena was renovated from 2010 to 2012. The north and south entrances were expanded with additions for US $ 21 million . The designs came from the architectural office Ellerbe Becket. In addition there were u. a. 40 stalls and kiosks; the existing luxury suites were renovated as well as the renewal of the sound system and the lighting technology . It started with the south side, the north side was completed in 2012.
