Career

Steve Maltais began his active career with the Wexford Raiders in the MTHL , for which he was active from 1985 to 1986. He then joined the Cornwall Royals in the Ontario Hockey League and went on the ice for their team for the following three years. During this time, the attacker was selected in the third round of the 1987 NHL Entry Draft in a total of 57th position by the Washington Capitals . In the 1989/90 season Maltais made his debut for the Capitals in the National Hockey League and remained pointless in nine missions. However, he spent most of the season with the Baltimore Skipjacks in the American Hockey League, where he was immediately one of the players with the highest points. In the following season he managed to increase his points yield and to achieve 84 scorer points for the Skipjacks in a total of 79 games . On June 21, 1991 Maltais was transferred from the Washington Capitals in an exchange deal together with Trent Klatt to the Minnesota North Stars , in exchange Shawn Chambers went to Washington. After twelve games for the North Stars, he was sent to the Kalamazoo Wings in the International Hockey League , where he scored 56 points in 48 games. In the same season, the offensive player was also in action for the Halifax Citadels in the American Hockey League .

On March 8, 1992 there was another player swap, as a result of which the Canadian was given in exchange for Kip Miller to the Québec Nordiques . Without having completed a game for the Nordiques, the Tampa Bay Lightning selected him on June 18, 1992 in the NHL Expansion Draft . In the franchise's inaugural season, Maltais played 63 NHL games for the Lightning and posted 20 points. After just one year, they gave it to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Dennis Vial . There he was unable to assert himself at any point and after a year of play he only had four appearances in which he made an assist. The attacker spent almost the entire season with their farm team , the Adirondack Red Wings , in the American Hockey League. Although he had scored a total of 100 points in 85 games for the Adirondack Red Wings, his contract was not renewed at the end of the 1993/94 season. On September 8, 1994, Maltais signed with the Chicago Wolves in the International Hockey League. In his first season with the Wolves he was immediately appointed captain of the new team, in the same season he just missed the 100 point mark and finished the season 1994/95 with 99 points from 82 games. In the following season he scored 122 points in 81 games of the regular season . In the following three years he exceeded the 100-point mark and won the Turner Cup for the first time with the Chicago Wolves in the 1997/98 season .

On October 6, 2000, the attacker signed a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets and went on the ice in 26 games for the team over the course of the season, in which he scored three points. In the same season he was sent again to the Chicago Wolves and immediately held a leadership position in the team. In the 2001/02 season he won the Calder Cup with the team for the first time . The team prevailed against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in five games in the final series . In the following years, Maltais could not quite build on its earlier successes and did not reach the 100 point mark. However, the attacker was still one of the most dangerous players in the league and was awarded the John B. Sollenberger Trophy as the best point player of the regular season after the 2002/03 season. In the season 2004/05 season he succeeded with the Wolves again in the finals of the Calder Cup, but lost the series in four games against the Philadelphia Phantoms .
