Ivan Čiernik (born October 30, 1977 in Levice , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak ice hockey player with German nationality who was under contract with the ice pirates Crimmitschau from the DEL2 until April 2018 .
Career
Ivan Čiernik began his ice hockey career in his Slovak homeland at MHC Plastika Nitra . There the winger from 1994 played for three years for both the junior team and the professional team in the extra league . After Čiernik was drafted in the 1996 NHL Entry Draft in 216th place by the Ottawa Senators , he decided a year later to move to North America. In his first season, the attacker was mainly used for the farm team of the Senators in Worcester, but still received initial missions in the NHL. In 1998/99 he played exclusively in the American Hockey League for the Adirondack Red Wings and the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks . The next two years the Slovak played for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the International Hockey League , where he also played sporadic games for the Ottawa Senators.
In the 2001/02 season , Čiernik played a large part of the year in the NHL, first for Ottawa and later for the Washington Capitals . In the following year, the striker got regular missions for the Capitals, with which he failed again early in the play-offs . The 2003/04 season meant a step backwards for Čiernik, as he again had to play a major part of the season in the AHL. After the end in the first play-off round, the Slovak moved back to Europe, where he joined the Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg in the DEL . Right off the bat, he developed into one of the best winger in the league and played a major role in the league newcomer's sporting relegation. However, the Wolfsburg had to relegate, which is why Čiernik decided to switch to the Cologne Sharks . There he increased his points yield to 61 points in 51 games in the 2005/06 season , making him one of the best players of the year, which earned him an invitation to the 2006 All-Star Game . In addition, Čiernik was chosen by a jury as the "best winger in the DEL" in the annual vote of the specialist magazine Ice Hockey News . In the regular 2007/2008 season , Ivan Čiernik scored 38 goals for the Haie and was therefore the top scorer for Cologne. He ended the subsequent play-off round with 11 goals as the top scorer of the 2007/08 play-offs .
Although his contract in Cologne ran until 2011, Čiernik launched a move to HK Sibir Novosibirsk from the newly founded Continental Hockey League in summer 2008 , as he was allegedly insulted by Haie coach Doug Mason after the lost final of the 2007/08 season was. After just one year, the Slovak returned to the KEC in the summer of 2009, where he received a one-year contract with an option for another season. For the 2011/12 season, the Slovak moved to the Malmö Redhawks from HockeyAllsvenskan , the second Swedish division. After a season in Sweden, the father of two sons returned to Germany and signed a contract with the Hannover Scorpions from the DEL for the 2012/13 season . He then moved to the Augsburg Panthers for the 2013/14 season .
After three years in Augsburg, Čiernik joined the German second division Eispiraten Crimmitschau in August 2016 .
International
For Slovakia , Čiernik took part in the U20 World Junior Championship in 1997 and the World Championships in 2006 , 2007 , 2008 and 2010 .
