Brian Willsie (born March 16, 1978 in London , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current official who played 391 games for the Colorado Avalanche , Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings in the course of his active career between 1995 and 2015 National Hockey League on the position of the right winger . Willsie also spent large parts of his career in the American Hockey League and the European top leagues.

Career

Brian Willsie was selected as the 146th overall player by the Colorado Avalanche during the 1996 NHL Entry Draft . He began his career as a hockey player with the Guelph Storm from the Ontario Hockey League , for which he played for a total of three years from 1995 to 1998.

Before the 1998/99 season, the Canadian was first included in the squad of the then farm team of the Avalanche, the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League , for which he first played in professional ice hockey. During the following season Willsie made his debut in the National Hockey League , but he only played once until the end of the season for Colorado. Because of exceeding the salary cap , the winger was transferred to the Washington Capitals in 2003 , where he was under contract for a total of three years, playing for the Portland Pirates from the AHL during the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season .

After another year with the Capitals, Willisie signed a contract as a free agent with the Los Angeles Kings on July 4, 2006 , for which he was active for the following two seasons, until he was also a free agent on July 15, 2008 to his ex- Club Colorado Avalanche returned. For the Denver franchise , the right- shooter made 42 appearances in the 2008/09 season and also gained game practice with their farm team, the Lake Erie Monsters , in the American Hockey League. In the following season, Willsie went mostly for the Monsters in the AHL on the ice. In July 2010, the Canadian again signed a contract with the Washington Capitals as a free agent. He failed to get stuck in the Caps NHL squad and spent almost the entire 2010/11 season on the farm team at the Hershey Bears , where the winger was the team's second-best scorer with 68 points in 76 games during the regular season.

On July 7, 2011, Willsie agreed on a two-way contract with a term of one year with the Montréal Canadiens , but was only used with the Hamilton Bulldogs in the AHL. After spending four years almost exclusively in the AHL, he decided to return to Europe in the summer of 2012, where he signed a trial contract with TPS Turku . During the following season his contract was extended until the end of the season and Willsie was appointed captain. By the start of the play-offs he scored 24 goals, so his contract was extended by one season in February 2013. Then Willsie was loaned to the Kloten Flyers until the end of the season to support them in the National League A relegation battle .

At the beginning of the 2013/13 season Willsie was loaned from TPS to the KHL Medveščak Zagreb from the KHL , but returned to the TPS squad in October 2013. In February 2014 he moved to Örebro HK in the Svenska Hockeyligan and ended his active professional career following the 2014/15 season . Since then he has acted as a consultant to his ex-team Colorado Avalanche.
