Career

Lance Ward first played ice hockey in his hometown Lloydminster before the defensive player went on the ice for four seasons for the Red Deer Rebels in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League from 1994 . In the 1996 NHL Entry Draft , he was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round in tenth position. However, since this did not get him to sign the contract and instead he continued to play for the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League, the Canadian was available again in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , where he was finally 63rd of the Florida Panthers in the third round was pulled.

After that was Ward from 1998 to 2000 for various teams in the East Coast Hockey League , International Hockey League and American Hockey League active and also was in the service of the Louisville Panthers , a farm team of the Florida Panthers, with whom he in the 1999/2000 season , the first round of playoffs reached. During the 2000/01 season Ward made his debut in the National Hockey League . He ran from 2001 to 2003 for the Florida Panthers and came to a total of 134 games, in which the right-shooter came on four goals, seven assists , eleven points and 254 penalty minutes. During the 2002/03 season , on January 30, 2003, the Panthers transferred the defender together with Sandis Ozoliņš in exchange for Pavel Trnka , Matt Cullen and a four-round suffrage in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim , for the he played a total of 75 games without scoring a goal and only gave five assists. In the 2004/05 season Ward did not play in the NHL due to the lockout and signed a contract with the Ottawa Senators in the summer of 2005 , who used him exclusively in the farm team Binghamton Senators in the American Hockey League during the 2005/06 season .

On June 5, 2006 Ward signed a one-year contract with the Swedish Elitserien club HV71 . There the Canadian stood out for his tough style of play and was also often involved in arguments with opposing players. With 273 penalty minutes in the 2006/07 season , the Canadian holds the record for the most penalty minutes in a season in the top Swedish division. After this season, the defender had already signed a two-year contract with EC Graz 99ers from Austria , but Graz terminated the contract before the start of the season, whereupon the Canadian returned to Sweden to his former club in Jönköping, where he received another one-year contract . In the 2007/08 season Ward was the first Swedish champion and then signed a contract for the following season with the Frankfurt Lions from the German Ice Hockey League . For the 2009/10 season Ward returned to the HV71, with which the Canadian won the Swedish championship for the second time in his career at the end of the season. After the end of his contract in the summer of 2011, Ward ended his active career.
