The Black Belles

The Black Belles (English for "The Black Beauties") is an alternative / rock / gothic all-girl quartet from Nashville . The band consists of Ruby Rogers (bass), Olivia Jean (vocals, organ, guitar), Shelby Lynne (drums) and Lil 'Boo (also known as Tina NoGood) (synthesizer). They were discovered by Jack White , who shortly thereafter offered them a recording contract with Third Man Records .

history

founding

Shelby Lynne grew up in California. She started playing drums and met Ruby Rogers and Olivia Jean at a girls' school. Bassist Ruby Rogers was ostracized early on for her flashy appearance. She learned to keep herself busy early on and was a kind of outsider. Her family supported her musically since childhood. Ruby Rogers developed a taste for early rock n 'roll, film, literature, comics, drawing, and photography. Detroit-based singer and guitarist Olivia Jean started a solo surf project called "Idea Fixe". In Nashville, Tennessee, she met her future band members, who seemed to have similar interests. When Lil 'Boo joined the band, the Black Belles were complete in 2009.

Recorded with Third Man Records

Jack White (producer and band member on The White Stripes , The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs ) discovered The Black Belles and saw their potential. Shortly afterwards, the songs What Can I Do? Were released in the recording studios of Third Man Records . and reads added. The first single What Can I Do? was released in 2010. These two songs were her first releases, for which two music videos were made under the direction of Jack White. The songs are only available as single and not as usual on the album of the same name The Black Belles .

Another single called Charlene II (I'm Over You) was made in collaboration with Stephen Colbert . Her debut album was released on November 8, 2011.

style

Their music is characterized by the garage sound and soul elements of the 1960s.

Light skin, black and white photography and a generally mystical appearance give the Black Belles a gloomy image and a special recognition value . Her hallmarks are black hair, black lips, and oversized black hats.

Appearances

On June 23, 2011, The Black Belles appeared on an episode of The Colbert Report , a satirical show directed by Stephen Colbert . There they appeared as backing singers for a song written by Stephen Colbert, Charlene II .

Music in the media
