Surahammar is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province County Västmanland and the historical province Västmanland .
It is the capital of the municipality of the same name . The place name Sura - (sour) hammar (hammer) refers to the iron processing factories that shaped the place for many years.
history
The place was formed on the Kolbäcksån river as a center for processing iron ore from nearby Norberg . Until the end of the 17th century there was only a small hammer mill, which was slightly expanded in the following century. The real boom came in 1845 with the takeover by the goldsmith E. A. Zethelius from Stockholm . This development was accelerated in 1872 when the joint stock company Surahammars bruks AB was founded. Several blast furnaces , rolling mills and forges were built , which, among other things, manufactured products for the Swedish railway industry.
In 1916 the company had about 1,350 employees and produced products for a total of 9.55 million Swedish kronor. The castle-like main building of the company was built on an island in Kolbäcksån. The construction of the Stockholm - Västerås - Bergslagen railway , which was connected to the company's own narrow - gauge railway , the Lisjöbanan , ensured the positive development of the place .
