The Fureys are an Irish folk band in which up to four brothers played. At times the band was called The Fureys and Davey Arthur .

Band history

The group was founded in 1978 by the four brothers Finbar, Eddie, Paul and George Furey. Before that, the musicians played in other formations. Eddie and Finbar Furey were a well-known duo as early as the early 1970s . Paul Furey appeared as The Buskers with Davey Arthur and Brendan Leeson . Both bands took part in the Irish Folk Festival , which toured the Federal Republic of Germany for the first time in 1974. They also played here as The Furey Brothers , and together with their father Ted, a well-known violinist, as The Furey Family .

In addition to traditional Irish music, they also showed contemporary pop influences early on. The Fureys had their greatest successes with Davey Arthur . The single When You Were Sweet Sixteen reached number 14 on the UK singles chart and was number 1 in Ireland . The Green Fields of France also became Irish number 1 and stayed in the singles charts for 28 weeks. The band also had two top 40 albums in the UK with Golden Days and At the End of the Day .

Finbar Furey left the band in 1996 to expand his solo career. Paul Furey died of cancer in 2002.

In 2008 the band celebrated their 30th anniversary by touring and making recordings.
