The Aphrodite 101 is a sailing yacht category device class . Since all yachts in this boat class are identical, it is also a popular regatta yacht . The sail area is approx. 42 m² (upwind with jib) and approx. 54 m² (upwind with genoa), the displacement is 3.2 t. It is also widely known as simply 101 , often also written as IOI (i.e.: i ohh i).

history

The Aphrodite 101 was designed in 1976 on behalf of Jörgen Juul Rasmussen († 2004) by the Danish designers Paul Elvstrøm and Jan Kjaerulff . Elvstrøm was able to contribute his experience as a sailor to the conception of the yacht and especially to its equipment and rigging , while Kjaerullf devoted himself to developing the shape of the boat hull. The first prototype was made in Halmstad in 1976 under the name Elvstroem 95 / Mungo. The originally 9.50 m long hull was then extended by 60 cm at a small shipyard on Langeland, so that it had a length of 10.10 m, and was renamed Aphrodite lOl (10.1 m). In the course of the season the yacht was shortened again by approx. 15 cm in the stern area in order to comply with the handicap regulations in force in Denmark at the time, so the Aphrodite lOl reached its current length of 9.95 m.

The rights for form and construction are now held by the 101 Association , the international class association that can also issue licenses for construction to a shipyard. The boat is made entirely of GRP and has a modern 7/8 rigged aluminum rig, which means that the forestay only extends to about 7/8 the height of the mast . The Aphrodite IOI is supplied as standard with a 10 HP built-in machine.

The sailing wardrobe of the Aphrodite 101 consists of a mainsail , jib and spinnaker . Sometimes, especially on Lake Constance, the 101 is also sailed with a 30 m² genoa . The rigging is very similar to the rigging of the Soling , with a self-tacking jib , and the shrouds and the spreader are spread very far aft. Elvstrøm was Soling World Champion in 1969 and 1974, so the Aphrodite 101, like the Soling, was sailed without a backstay . Since 1980, however, all yachts have been delivered with backstays, as the rig is considerably larger than that of the Soling.

To date, almost 500 boats of this type have been built by various shipyards in Denmark, England and most recently in Germany. The largest fleet is still based in Denmark, where the Aphrodite 101 also enjoys the status of the national one- class class. There is also a fleet of around 140 yachts on Lake Constance, which enjoys strong regatta activity and is numerically the strongest class in the area. The Aphrodite 101 World Cup , the international class championship, also takes place there every two years . This event takes place at a high sailing level, also the skipper of the unsuccessful German America's Cup campaign in 2007 Jesper Bank won this regatta in 1990 and 1992.

hull

The Aphrodite has a V-shaped hull (hull shape that tapers towards the bottom) made of GRP (glass fiber reinforced polyester construction). It was made by hand lay -up. The hull of the Aphrodite IOI is comparatively slim, with a length of around 10 m it is only 2.40 m wide. The bolted keel fin contains 1.6 tons of lead. The rudder blade is also made of GRP and attached to a stainless steel shaft.

Below deck, cabin

There are a total of 6 berths below deck : two saloon berths , two dog berths and a V-shaped double berth in the bow. There is also a folding salon table, a small pantry and a porta-potti (chemical toilet) as standard. The interior is largely made of mahogany wood. The standing height in the cabin is only 1.48 m, which has to be accepted as a compromise for the sporty look and corresponding sailing properties.

Rigging and sails

The Aphrodite had a very modern 7/8 rigged aluminum rig with backstays and a swept spreader pair. The sails (except for the genoa) were made of non-aromatic polyamides (so no expensive Mylar / Kevlar cloth). Only this material is permitted for regattas, the material of the genoa used on Lake Constance is free.

equipment

The Aphrodite 101 was delivered as standard with a 10 HP diesel engine with a folding propeller. The self-tacking jib, the complete spinnaker equipment and a total of 6 winches for a yacht of this size show that a sporty clientele was targeted. You could order the Aphrodite with a Treadmaster deck or with a teak deck . A fire extinguisher and an assortment of fenders and mooring lines were also included.

Regatta and races

The main focus of regatta activities with the Aphrodite is on Lake Constance, where the Lake Constance championship is sailed in 6 main regattas, as well as the World Cup every two years. Other regattas take place in Scandinavia, including a Danish championship.

Similar boats

There are some ship types comparable to the Aphrodite, all of which were designed by Scandinavian designers between around 1976 and 1983. This includes, for example, the Inferno 29 , which is also still quite common on Lake Constance. The Albin Vega is a bit older, but can still be found frequently . What they have in common is the slim hull and the relatively large weight of the keel.
