The 505 is an international two-man dinghy . Its name is derived from its length (5.05 m). The logo consists of the two digits "5" and a circular "zero" in between. She is considered to be very fast, agile and very lively. It is ideally suited for demanding regatta sailors . The 505 regattas are sailed at a very high level, as many top sailors (world champions / European champions / Olympic champions) from other boat classes have switched to this boat. The international class since 1955 was designed in 1954 by the Briton John Westell.

The 505 is now widely used, with a total of 9100 boats registered by 2012. In Germany, around 100 participants have been taking part in at least three ranking regattas for years; the number of ships is around 200. The centers are in northern Germany (especially Hamburg, Kiel and Eckernförde ), the Berlin area and Bavaria.
