successes
Charles Currey originally wanted a career in the British Navy, but had to give up these plans due to illness. Instead, he worked as a boat builder. Shortly before the start of World War II , he was inducted into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and later commanded a gunboat that patrolled the English Channel . He ended his naval career with the rank of Lieutenant Commander . After the war, he worked at Fairey Marine , where he was involved in the development of the Firefly boat class , which was sailed at the 1948 Olympic Games in London . Currey was not nominated by the British association, but was one of the favorites. Four years later he finally took part in the Olympic Games in Helsinki in the Finn dinghy . With 5449 points he finished second behind Paul Elvstrøm and ahead of Rickard Sarby and thus secured the silver medal. In the 1960s he was a director at Fairey Marine .
His son Alistair Currey also took part in the Olympic sailing regatta in 1972 .
