Daniël Marinus Johannes "Daan" Kagchelland (born March 25, 1914 in Rotterdam , † December 24, 1998 in The Hague ) was a Dutch sailor . He is the last sailor to date to win a gold medal for the Netherlands in a boat at the Olympic Games.
Daan Kagchelland, who started sailing at the age of 14, took part in the “ O-Jolle ” class in the 1936 Olympic sailing competitions off Kiel. The Olympic dinghy, or O-dinghy for short, was designed as a one-man regatta boat especially for these games. Because the boat class was new, the Olympic start was preceded by a number of qualifying races in the Netherlands, and Ricus van de Stadt traveled to Berlin as a reserve man. Kagchelland's boat in Kiel, which like all of them had been provided by the organizing committee, was named Nuremberg . The sailing competitions suffered from stormy weather, at the first regatta of the O-dinghy, winds of 7 to 8 prevailed , which proved to be an advantage for the 75 kilogram Kagchelland.
After winning the gold medal, Kagchelland, a trained mechanical engineer, was enthusiastically received in Rotterdam together with the three-time Olympic swimming champion Hendrika Mastenbroek .
