The General Sánchez Cerro Province is located in the Moquegua region in southern Peru . The province has an area of 5682 km². In the 2017 census, the population was 14,865. 10 years earlier it was 24,904. The administrative seat is Omate . The province was named after Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro (1889–1933), General and Head of State of Peru.
Geographical location
The province of General Sánchez Cerro is in the north of the Moquegua region. It has a lengthwise extension in SW-NE direction of 145 km. The province extends over the Peruvian Western Cordillera . In the south of the province lies the desert-like, arid coastal region. The province reaches up to 35 km to the Pacific coast . The Río Tambo River drains the area. In the northwest of the province rises the 5672 m high volcano Ubinas .
The province of General Sánchez Cerro borders in the south on the province of Mariscal Nieto , in the northeast on the Puno region and in the northwest on the Arequipa region .
Administrative division
General Sánchez Cerro Province consists of the following eleven districts. The Omate district is the seat of the provincial administration.
