The La Capilla district is located in the General Sánchez Cerro Province in the Moquegua region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on September 30, 1942. It has an area of ​​780 km². The 2017 census counted 681 residents. In 1993 the population was 1128, in 2007 it was 1731. The district administration is located in the approximately 1800  m high village of La Capilla with 135 inhabitants (as of 2017). La Capilla is located 24 km west-southwest of the provincial capital Omate .

Geographical location

The district of La Capilla is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the extreme southwest of the province of General Sánchez Cerro. The Río Tambo flows along the southern district boundary in a west-southwest direction.

The La Capilla district borders in the west on the Cocachacra district ( Islay province ), in the northwest on the Polobaya district ( Arequipa province ), in the northeast and east on the Puquina district and in the south on the Moquegua district ( Mariscal Nieto province ).
