The Puquina district is located in the General Sánchez Cerro Province in the Moquegua region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​594 km². The 2017 census counted 2608 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3622, in 2007 it was 2979. The district administration is located in the 3084  m high village of Puquina with 865 inhabitants (as of 2017). Puquina is located 23 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Omate .

Geographical location

The district of Puquina is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the northwest of the province of General Sanchez Cerro. The area is drained south to the Río Tambo . This flows along the southeastern district boundary to the southwest. In the extreme northwest is the mountain range of the Pichu Pichu volcano .

The Puquina district borders in the southwest on the La Capilla district , in the west on the Polobaya district , in the extreme northwest on the Pocsi district , in the north on the San Juan de Tarucani district (all three aforementioned districts are in the Arequipa province ), to the east to the districts of Coalaque and Omate and to the south to the district of Moquegua ( Mariscal Nieto province ).
