The Chojata District is located in the General Sánchez Cerro Province in the Moquegua Region in southwestern Peru . The district was established on February 15, 1955. It has an area of ​​858 km². The 2017 census counted 754 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1537, in 2007 2213. The district administration is located in the 3625  m high village of Chojata with 335 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chojata is located 40 km northeast of the provincial capital Omate .

Geographical location

The district of Chojata is located on the southern flank of the Cordillera Volcánica in the central east of the province of General Sánchez Cerro. In the northwest, the district extends to the east bank of the Río Tambo, which flows south .

The Chojata district is bordered to the west by the district Matalaque , in the extreme northwest of the district Ubinas , on the north by the district Lloque , in the northeast on the district Ichuña , in the far east to the district Pichacani ( province of Puno ) and on the south by the districts Carumas and San Cristóbal (both in the Mariscal Nieto province ).
