NGC 3838 is a lens-shaped galaxy of the Hubble-type S0 / a in the Great Bear in the northern sky . It is an estimated 62 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light years in diameter. Together with PGC 36585, it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair and is considered a member of the NGC 3795 group ( LGG 244 ).

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on March 18, 1790 .
