NGC 3817 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a with an active galaxy core in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 276 million light years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light years in diameter. Together with PGC 213872 and PGC 213873 it forms a galaxy trio .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3819 , NGC 3820 , NGC 3822 , NGC 3825 .

The object was discovered on January 18, 1828 by John Herschel .
