NGC 3842 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E3 in Leo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 280 million light years from the Milky Way , has a diameter of about 115,000 ly, and is the brightest member of the Leo galaxy cluster Abell 1367 .
The galaxies NGC 3837 , NGC 3841 , NGC 3844 , NGC 3845 are located in the same area of the sky .
A black hole with 9.7 billion solar masses is suspected to be in the center of this galaxy . This is what research by Nicholas McConnell at the University of California has shown .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 26, 1785 .
