NGC 3851 is an elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E3 in Leo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 284 million light years from the Milky Way , about 50,000 ly in diameter, and a member of the Leo galaxy cluster Abell 1367 .
The galaxies NGC 3841 , NGC 3842 , NGC 3844 , NGC 3845 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on February 24, 1827 .
