NGC 3871 = IC 2959 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sb with an active galaxy core in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 432 million light years from the Milky Way and about 180,000 light years in diameter.
In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 3878 , NGC 3880 , NGC 3881 , IC 2958 .
The object was discovered on April 3, 1831 by John Herschel with his 18.7-inch reflector telescope.
