NGC 3870 is a lenticular dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Great Bear in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 37 million light years from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light years in diameter.
The galaxy IC 731 is located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on March 17, 1790 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel with his 18.7-inch reflector telescope.
