Chushul is a place in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh .

Location and inhabitants

The place is located southeast of Leh in the Ladakhi part of Changthang and is very close to the Line of Actual Control . The area is closed to foreign tourists. Domestic tourists, however, can visit the place with an Inner Line Permit. Chushul can be reached via the Pangong Tso . From Merak , Chushul is accessible via a gravel road. Chushul can also be reached via the Indus Valley via Upshi . The almost 1000 inhabitants live from agriculture and the military.

history

In the Treaty of Chushul in 1842, the border between Ladakh and Tibet was officially established. Chushul was an important place in the war with China in 1962 . Heavy fighting took place there on November 18, 1962 at Rezang La (5100 m), with heavy losses of the Chinese, the Indian army managed that the area still belongs to India. Nearby is an important memorial that commemorates the fighting. The border between China and India is always a formal meeting point for discussions.
