Leh is a district in the Indian Union Territory of Ladakh .

With an area of ​​45,110 km², Leh is the second largest district in India after Kachch in Gujarat . In the north it borders on the Ghanche district in Gilgit-Baltistan . Leh has a short border with Xinjiang in the People's Republic of China , on the Karakorum Pass . Aksai Chin and Tibet are to the east. Kargil District is to the west and Lahaul and Spiti to the south. The administrative seat of the district is the city of Leh .

All of Ladakh was administered by Leh until July 1, 1979. Then the Kargil District was created. The different religions were a point of contention between Buddhists and Muslims in the second half of the 20th century and one of the reasons for the division.

According to the 2011 census , Leh was the least populated of 22 districts in Jammu and Kashmir with 147,104 inhabitants after Kargil. This means that the district ranks 599 out of 640 in India in terms of population. The district has a population density of 3 people per square kilometer. The population growth between 2001 and 2011 was 25.48%. Leh has a gender distribution of 583 women for 1000 men. The literacy rate is 80.48%.

According to the 2001 census, there were 117,232 Buddhists in the district, or 77.3% of the population, 13.8% of the population were Muslim and Hindus were 8.2%.

Leh is divided into 3 Tehsil and 9 blocks. The nine blocks are Durbuk, Khalsi, Saspol, Kharu, Leh, Chuchot, Nobra, Panamik and Nyoma.

Autonomous Hill Council

Leh district has been administered by the elected Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) since 1995 .
