The Characato district is located in the Arequipa Province of Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of 86 km². At the 2017 census, there were 12,949 residents in the district. In 1993, the population in 3429 was, in 2007 at the 6726th in the district Characato there is only the same name in 2459 m high-lying city Characato . Characato is located on the south-eastern edge of the metropolitan area of the provincial and regional capital Arequipa, about 10 km from the city center.
Geographical location
The Characato district is centrally located in the Arequipa province. The course of the Río Cancahuani forms the district boundary in the northwest. The Characato district lies at the foot of the western foothills of the 5665 m high volcano Picchu Picchu, 26 km to the east .
The Characato district is bordered to the north by the districts Sabandía and Chiguata , in the easternmost part of the district of San Juan de Tarucani , on the south by the districts Pocsi and Mollebaya and in the far west to the district Socabaya .
