The Yura district is located in the Arequipa Province of Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of ​​1942.9 km². At the 2017 census, 33,346 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 6303, in 2007 it was 16,020. The district administration is located in the 2590  m high city of Ciudad de Dios , 7 km northwest of Arequipa airport . The surrounding area, also known as Cono Norte , is now populated by over 30,000 people. The rest of the district is uninhabited with the exception of a few settlements. The town of Yura Viejo, located 13 km northwest of Ciudad de Dios, forms the historic center of the district, Los Baños is officially the district's capital. There is a cement plant in Yura (Estación) .

Geographical location

The Yura district is located in the central north of the Arequipa province. It extends over the mountains of the Peruvian Western Cordillera and extends in the southwest to the Río Chili . Its tributaries Río Los Andenes and Río Yura flow through the western part of the district. In the east, the upper reaches of the Río Chili forms the district boundary. In the southeast the volcano Chachani ( 6057  m ) rises , in the west lies the heavily eroded volcano Cerro Nicholson ( 2525  m ). The district of Yura borders in the southwest with the district Vítor , in the northwest with the district Huanca ( province Caylloma ), in the north with the districts Achoma , Yanque and San Antonio de Chuca (all in the province Caylloma), in the east with the district San Juan de Tarucani and in the south to the districts of Cayma , Cerro Colorado and Uchumayo .
