The district of Yanque is located in the province of Caylloma in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of 1112 km². The 2017 census counted 2117 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2254, in 2007 2319. The district administration is located in the 3417 m high village of Yanque with 1549 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yanque is located 6 km west of the provincial capital Chivay and is the only larger town in the district.
Geographical location
The Yanque District is located in the southeast of Caylloma Province. The district is located on the south bank of the west flowing Río Colca . Agriculture is practiced on terraces above the Colca Valley . There are several lookout points that overlook the gorge. These are frequented by tourists. The mountains in the south and east of the district are dry and barren. In the southwest of the district rises the ( 5277 m ) high Nevado Ananto, in the east the 5425 m high Nevado Huarancate.
The Yanque district is bordered to the west by the district Achoma , in the northwest on the district Coporaque , on the north by the districts Chivay and Callalli , on the east by the district of San Antonio de Chuca and the south by the district Yura ( Arequipa Province ).
