The Lari district is located in the Caylloma Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district has an area of 389 km². The 2017 census counted 904 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1255, in 2007 it was 1373. The district administration is located in the 3330 m high village of Lari with 849 inhabitants (as of 2017). Lari is located 18 km west-northwest of the provincial capital Chivay .
Geographical location
The Lari district is located in the Cordillera Volcánica on the north bank of the Río Colca, which flows westwards . The maximum longitudinal extent in SSW-NNE direction is about 32 km. The continental watershed runs roughly in the middle in an east-west direction. In the extreme west rises the 5550 m high Surihuiri, in the center the 5170 m high Nevado Quehuisha and in the extreme east the well-known volcano Nevado Mismi with a height of 5597 m . The area north of this ridge is drained by the Río Hornillos , a tributary of the Río Apurímac . At the foot of the latter two mountains there are springs that are considered to be the farthest from the mouth of the Amazon .
The district of Lari borders in the southwest with the district Madrigal , in the west with the district Tapay , in the north with the district Caylloma , in the northeast with the district Tuti , in the southeast with the district Ichupampa and in the south with the district Maca .
