The Cabanaconde district is located in the Caylloma Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on January 2, 1857. It has an area of ​​461 km². The 2017 census counted 2096 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3196, in 2007 it was 2842. The district administration is located in the 3287  m high village of Cabanaconde with 1632 inhabitants (as of 2017). The only other village in the district is Pinchollo with 353 inhabitants.

Geographical location

The Cabanaconde district is 40 km west of the provincial capital Chivay in the southwest of the Caylloma province. It has a longitudinal extension in east-west direction of 32 km and a width of 25 km. The district is located on the south bank of the west flowing Río Colca . Agriculture is practiced on terraces above the Colca Valley . There are numerous vantage points that overlook the gorge. These are frequented by tourists. The mountains in the south of the district are dry and barren. There is the secluded lake Laguna Mucurca. In the southeast of the district rises the 6025  m high extinct volcano Hualca Hualca .

The Cabanaconde district borders in the southwest on the Huambo district , in the northwest on the Choco district ( Castilla province ), in the north on the Tapay district , in the northeast on the Madrigal district , in the east on the Maca district and in the south on the Lluta district .
