The Chiguata district is located in the Arequipa Province of Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district goes back to the foundation of the village of Chiguata on January 22, 1540. The actual foundation of the Chiguata district took place on January 2, 1825. The district has an area of ​​460.81 km². At the 2017 census, 2,939 people lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 2113, in 2007 it was 2686. The district administration is located in the 2946  m high village of Chiguata with 415 inhabitants (as of 2017). Chiguata is located on the eastern edge of the metropolitan area of ​​the provincial and regional capital Arequipa, 15 km from the city center.

Geographical location

The Chiguata District is located in the central east of the Arequipa Province. It extends between the two volcanoes Misti in the northwest and Picchu Picchu in the southeast.

The district of Chiguata is bordered to the west by the districts of Paucarpata , Mariano Melgar and Miraflores , to the north and east by the district of San Juan de Tarucani and to the south by the districts of Characato and Sabandía .
