Arte ( Japanese ア ル テ , Arute ) is a manga series by Kei Ohkubo that has been published in Japan since 2013. The story tells of a young artist in Florence in the 16th century. It was adapted as an anime series in 2020 .

content

In 16th century Florence the girl Arte grew up in the wealthy Spalletti family. Her father always encouraged her enthusiasm for art and especially painting. But after his death, her mother wants to prepare Arte for the role of a wife. Due to the death of the husband, the family is now worse off and Arte should still get a husband who can guarantee her a good life. She refuses and goes without further ado to do an apprenticeship with one of the many artists in town. But everyone rejects her because she is a woman. Only Leo, who works all alone, finally accepts Arte after she has prepared a seemingly impossible number of painting grounds for him. He continues to give her heavy physical tasks, lets her do the necessary manual work herself and - unlike the other men - does not take into account that she is a woman. Arte likes it and is motivated. She always finds the favor or rejection of other men degrading. It is the same with the young artist Angelo, who out of courtesy wants to do everything for her.

During her work, Arte met the courtesan Veronica, whom Leo frequently hired. Veronica likes the girl and wants her to do the next painting so that Arte can get her first job. She is impressed by the self-confident young woman and makes friends with her. But when Arte learns of Veronica's ruthless treatment of her suitors, she does not hold back her rejection. Arte learns that this is Veronica's way of maintaining her independence as a woman. The friendship remains, even if Arte continues to reject this path.

reception

In her review in Tagesspiegel , Julia Frese describes the story of Arte as unrealistic and predictable, but enriched with interspersed historical facts and striving for authenticity. The drawings are kept in the tradition of Renaissance painting and show the world of the series in many details. The ambience and the resulting dense narrative atmosphere made the story almost a minor matter, but it was unclear whether this was the reason for reading many volumes.
