Wakanim is a French video-on-demand platform for animes founded in 2009 and is part of Funimation . The platform is available in French, German, English and Russian. In Germany, Wakanim is closely interwoven with the publisher Peppermint Anime . Many of the animes in the German version come from the Peppermint portfolio, but external publishers can also publish their animes on Wakanim. Over 90 titles are available on the German side in September 2019. In addition to Wakanim, the parent company Sony also maintains the SVoD service Animax on Demand in Germany , which is available via Prime Video and Giga TV .

history

Wakanim was founded on February 27, 2009 in Tourcoing, France, as a community-based video-on-demand platform and was initially aimed at anime fans in France . The first anime on the platform was The World God Only Knows . In 2013, Wakanim made a first attempt to expand overseas and the service expanded to the UK . Wakanim UK has now been reinstated. In March 2015, Aniplex became the main shareholder. The entry into Aniplex made it possible for Wakanim to expand abroad again, which has been increasingly done since 2017. The Nordic countries started in June 2017 , followed by the German-speaking area. On September 21, 2017, the website for the German area was made available and received a German localization, but the official German-language start was only on September 26, 2017. The last major expansion took place in January 2018 by offering an offer in Russian for countries in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Wakanim works closely with the German publisher Peppermint Anime and its former VoD platform AkibaPass, both of which are also owned by Sony . At the start of the offer in Germany, the first titles from the AkibaPass portfolio were available. With UQ Holder! and Code: Realize brought Wakanim its first simulcasts for the German-speaking area. In favor of Wakanim, the VoD offer on the AkibaPass platform was discontinued on July 31, 2018 and converted into a pure merchandise shop and event platform. Sony Pictures Television and Aniplex announced a joint venture between Wakanim, Funimation and the Madman Anime Group in September 2019 . Funimation acts internationally as a licensee for animes and distributes them to the platforms of Wakanim, Funimation and Madman.

Technical

The videos are DRM protected. The playback takes place via a proprietary HTML5 player called JW-Player in version 8.11.8 (as of February 2020). Wakanim's offer can be used via a browser or an app. Wakanim offers apps for the Xbox One , PlayStation 4 , Windows 10 , Amazon Fire TV , iOS and Android platforms .
