Course of the road

The A855 road is an A-road on the Isle of Skye in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It branches off the A87 in the island's capital Portree and opens up the northern Trotternish peninsula and ends in Uig , where it meets the A87 again, which ends there at the ferry port .
course
The road begins at the junction of the A87 west of downtown Portree. From there it runs through downtown and past the old port of Portree and turns north towards the Trotternish Peninsula. North of Portree it runs through largely uninhabited heathland, past several lakes, until it approaches the coast at the north end of Loch Leathan at the Bearreraig hydropower station. From a parking lot, the Old Man of Storr can be reached with a short hike , a striking rock needle that can be seen from a long distance when coming from Portree. To the north of this, the A855 is just above the steep coast. Several parking spaces offer viewpoints of the basalt cliffs of the cliffs, including Kilt Rock .
In the further course the A855 passes various scattered settlements with crofter houses and cottages. The largest settlement is Staffin , where to the west the only road connection branches off across Trotternish over the Quiraing to Uig. From Staffin, the A855 continues north through smaller scattered settlements to Balmaqueen, where it turns west at Duntulm Castle and from there turns south again. As far as Uig, the road passes various smaller scattered settlements, near Kilmuir is the Skye Museum of Island Life on the A855.
In total, the A855 is almost 54 kilometers long, about 33 miles. It has had its current length since 1932; previously, since the introduction of the British road classification in 1922, the A855 only ran as far as the port of Portree. From Portree to Staffin it is mainly two-lane, only two short sections north of Portree and along Loch Fada are still designed as a single track road . North of the junction to Quiraing near Staffin, the A855 is again a single track road with meeting points, and the rest of the route along the north and west coast from Trotternish to Uig is also a single track road.
