The Old Man of Storr ( Scottish Gaelic Bodach of Storr ) is a 48 meter high rock needle on to the Inner Hebrides belonging Scottish island of Skye . It is located on the Trotternish peninsula , about ten kilometers north of the island's capital Portree , and is one of the most famous attractions on the island. The name Storr comes from Old Norse and means large or summit .

The Trotternish Peninsula, like most of Skye, consists of tertiary basalt rocks that lie on older sediments from the Jurassic . Approximately in the middle of the peninsula runs a clearly visible, eastward sloping edge in a north-south direction. In this area, the deeper sediments gave in to the weight of the basalt, causing enormous landslides . The slipping rocks formed on the east side of the edge of the abyss sometimes bizarre and labyrinthine rock structures, such as the Quiraing at the northern end of Trotternish .

In the area of the highest point of the edge, the 719 meter high The Storr (or Storr ), various rocks and pinnacles formed below, the most noticeable of which is the Old Man of Storr. The rocky area below the edge of the precipice up to the Old Man is also known as The Sanctuary .

There are other pinnacles next to the Old Man, sometimes referred to as his family, but a rock pinnacle formerly known as his wife collapsed years ago. According to a legend, an old man and his wife were looking for a runaway cow in the area. In doing so, they met giants from whom they fled. During the escape, they looked back and were petrified.

The type locality for the rare mineral Gyrolith is located at the Old Man of Storr .

The Old Man was first climbed in 1955 by British climbers Don Whillans and James Barber . They classified the route as very severe , due to the relatively fragile basalt it has only rarely been repeated since then. The Old Man, sometimes described as an oversized menhir , and his surroundings have already served as a film set several times, most recently in 2012 for the science fiction film Prometheus - Dark Characters by Ridley Scott and the fantasy film Snow White and the Huntsman .
