The Puyca district is located in the La Unión Province in the Arequipa region in southwestern Peru . The district was founded on October 13, 1891. It has an area of 1504 km². The 2017 census counted 2528 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 2915, in 2007 2886. The district administration is located in the 3658 m high village of Puyca with 816 inhabitants (as of 2017). Puyca is located 27 km northeast of the provincial capital Cotahuasi .
Geographical location
The Puyca district is located in the northeast of the La Unión province. The upper reaches of the Río Cotahuasi flows along the western district boundary in a south-south-west direction. In the extreme southeast rises the 5498 m high extinct volcano Firura . The Cordillera Huanzo with the continental divide runs along the northern district boundary .
The Puyca district borders in the east on the Cayarani district ( Condesuyos province ), in the south on the Salamanca district (also in the Condesuyos province), in the southeast on the Alca district , in the west on the Huaynacotas district , in the north on the Oropesa district ( Antabamba province ) and in the northeast to the Santo Tomás district ( Chumbivilcas province ).
