The Toraya district is located in the Aymaraes province in the Apurímac region in central southern Peru . The district was established on July 15, 1936. It has an area of ​​169 km². The 2017 census counted 1347 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1494, in 2007 it was 1690. The district administration is located in the 3146  m high village of Toraya with 450 inhabitants (as of 2017). Toraya is located 27 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Chalhuanca .

Geographical location

The Toraya district is located in the Andean highlands on the west bank of the Río Chalhuanca in the north-west of the Aymaraes province.

The Toraya district is bordered on the southwest by the district Capaya , the west by the district Tumay Huaraca ( province of Andahuaylas ), in the north and northeast on the district Colcabamba and on the southeast by the district Ihuayllo .
