The Yanaca district is located in the Aymaraes province of the Apurímac region in south- central Peru . The district founded on December 28, 1961 has an area of 104 km². At the 2017 census, there were 1,027 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 1357, in 2007 it was 1182. The district administration is located in the 3340 m high village of Yanaca with 598 inhabitants (as of 2017). Yanaca is about 12 km northeast of the provincial capital Chalhuanca . There are several archaeological sites in the district.
Geographical location
The Yanaca district extends over the Andean highlands in the central east of the Aymaraes province. The district has a longitudinal extension in NNW-SSE direction of 17.5 km and a maximum width of almost 10 km. The Río Pachachaca (also Río Antabamba ) flows north along the northeastern district boundary . In the west runs a mountain range over 4400 m high, which separates the river valleys of Río Pachachaca in the east and Río Chalhuanca in the west.
The district of Yanaca borders in the south and in the west on the district Chalhuanca , in the north on the district Justo Apu Sahuaraura , in the northeast on the district Tapairihua and in the east on the district Pocohuanca .
