The Sañayca district is located in the Aymaraes Province in the Apurímac region in south- central Peru . The district was established on November 14, 1944. It has an area of ​​365 km². The 2017 census counted 1156 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1255, in 2007 it was 1299. The district administration is located in the 3370  m high village of Sañayca with 555 inhabitants (as of 2017). Sañayca is located 15 km northwest of the provincial capital Chalhuanca .

Geographical location

The Sañayca district is located in the Andean highlands in the far west of the Aymaraes province. The Río Chalhuanca flows north along the northeastern district boundary . The south of the district lies in the catchment area of the Río Chicha (also Río Soras) and is drained in a north-westerly direction via the Río Huayllaripa.

The Sañayca district is bordered to the west by the district Pampachiri ( province of Andahuaylas ), the north by the district Capaya , in the northeast on the district Soraya , on the east by the district Chalhuanca and the south by the district Cotaruse .
